The Importance of Joining A Veteran or Military Community

older-couple-600Serving a country is a huge and life-changing honor. Although it can be a huge sacrifice, it is also something that positively shapes character, is beneficial and highly valued by your country, and is an important bonding experience for many people. Because serving in the military is such a uniquely demanding experience, it can be very helpful to have others in your life who have been through something similar. That’s where joining a veteran or military community comes in – it is a safe place for you to connect with others who have similar life experiences.

Here are a few more reasons you should consider joining a veteran or military community.

You will develop a support system and a social network.

It can be tough to adjust to civilian life after having served full-time for several years. A veteran/military community will help you make friends in your new location, and everyone there will have some understanding of your experiences, making it easier to connect and open up to them. Having an emotional support system after returning from active duty is vital, as you may experience rough times while readjusting to a normal schedule.

There are many different types of veteran and military communities. Many are focused on a particular branch of the military, such as the Army or the Marines. Some are geared towards specific demographics, such as women or older veterans. Some are based on particular social interests – for example, you can find groups who focus on athletics, volunteering, or just general socializing and networking. There are even communities that are entirely online. By picking an organization that fits your needs and desires, you will be more likely to meet other individuals you connect with.

You may have access to a variety of financial benefits and other resources.

Depending on what type of organization you are looking to join, you may receive a variety of benefits to help you cope with life as a veteran. You and your family may be eligible for financial compensation, which can be extremely helpful in the first few years out of the military as you establish a new career. You also may be able to access resources such as job placement programs, free medical services (both physical and mental/emotional), scholarships, retirement benefits, and more.

Most of these organizations are free or have very minimal membership dues.

Worried about the cost of joining a military community? Don’t be. Most of them are either free or have a low yearly membership fee (usually under $50). You don’t have to spend much money to become part of these important social organizations. Many are also registered with the VA, and can help you with VA benefits and services.

If you are currently in the military, or have just returned from active duty, joining a military organization will have many benefits for you. A simple Google search can help you find the one that is right for you.
